Guess that means I'll be buying it ... again ... this has got to be the 10th or 12th time I've bought the "Pepper" album!!! First, the original vinyl release in 1967 (in mono) ... and then a stereo version several years later ... the cassette tape ... the limited edition picture disk ... the Beatles Complete box set ... the first CD release ... and then the remastered version ... as well as both the stereo and the mono CD box sets of all the remastered albums ... not to mention the Capitol mono / stereo CD ... and I'm sure there are more (because I also bought the British import and then, when all of the Capitol track lists were eliminated in favor of the British releases, I bought another final vinyl edition [which is still sealed] just in case. Crazy??? You betcha ... but I've just GOTTA have the complete 6-disc collectors edition! (kk)
Speaking of "Sgt. Pepper", it looks like we blew it with one of our
comments the other day ... several readers jumped in to point it out ...
>>>If one takes a magnifying glass to the doll wearing
the "Welcome the Rolling Stones" shirt on the Sgt. Pepper's album, they can see
written on the sleeves "WMCA Good Guys", a reference to one of the great NYC
radio stations of the day. (Mark)
>>>With the actual
album you don't even need a magnifying glass to see it ... homage, I guess, to
the time they spent with Murray The K on their first trip to America.
(kk)
Kent,
In 1964, Murray The K was on WINS (the year before it
made its change to an all-news format), not WMCA.
– Randy Price
Murray The K was with WINS. WMCA
had a much wider playlist than it's competition including playing more soul
records, which I believe the Beatles loved.
Mark
Murray the K was on 1010 WINS until 1965, not Fabulous
57 WMCA. He may have worked at MCA for awhile however. But his main Beatles
connection was when he was on WINS before their format change to All News All
The Time.
And Check This Out ...
And are you sure it was WMCA that is on that shirt? I
thought I read somewhere years ago that it was another of many
stations nationwide using the Good Guys moniker in the mid-60s. (I could be
wrong, which pains me deeply ... and I should know better. Forgive my feeble
brain as I have not played a record on the radio since January 12,
2016.)
I'm back to talk radio ... but not the "old man in his
underwear" kind of talk ... its a true variety show on 77 WABC NYC and 790 KABC
in LA these days on Sunday nights on The Late Joey Reynolds Show, working as
Joey's sidekick and we are streaming audio via the iHeartRadio app ... and live
video at
www.SundayNight.com 9 pm EDT / 8 pm Central.
Be BIG.

Upon closer review WITH a magnifying glass, it's kinda weird because "GOOD
GUYS" is prominently displayed on the doll's left arm but the type on the right
arm is almost impossible to read.
However I did find this article, which states otherwise, suggesting that it
was WMPS rather than WMCA ... (you're right ... stations all over the country
had adopted the "good guys" moniker) ... and, in fact, was not The Beatles'
homage to the radio station (whichever one it was) but rather a shirt promoting
a Rolling Stones concert which, when read correctly, says "WMPS (or WMCA) GOOD
GUYS WELCOME THE ROLLING STONES".
I love the last paragraph of the article, which reads:
What story is the correct one? Who knows,
however, it proves yet again that when dealing
with stories concerning the Sgt. Pepper sleeve
you just never know what is real and what is
bogus. I mean, they way they carry on you
would think they were hiding some hidden secret
or something?
Doesn't this guy know that NOTHING is real ... and that it's
nothing to get hung about???
(kk)
Kent,
Although Murry the K was on WMCA in New
York in the 1950's, during the original 'Beatlemania' era, he was on WINS
from mid 1958 until 1965. WINS was where he called himself 'The Fifth Beatle'.
WABC
in '64 & '65, was calling itself "W-A-Beatles-C". WABC even had PAMS of
Dallas create a series of Beatles sounding jingles that PAMS syndicated to radio
stations in North America.
I've
attached a copy of PAMS 'Beatles' jingles 25D. Amazing that PAMS didn't get
sued for these since they were a direct rip-off of Beatles hits, but it was a
different era.
Doug Thompson in
Toronto
LOL, these are GREAT!!! (Actually, they're
HORRIBLE ... but SO great to hear these after 50+ years.) Obviously WABC
believed The Beatles were the real deal ... and here to stay! Thanks so much
for sharing! (kk)
And Check This Out ...
Just got this from Charles Rosenay ... who will ALSO be celebrating the
50th Anniversary of "Sgt. Pepper" in his own unique way ...
